Glycyrrhiza glabra
(Licorice Root)

Famous for its
delicious distinctive flavor, licorice is a main ingredient in many candy,
confection and beverage recipes. It is also used throughout the world as a
traditional herbal remedy.
Licorice has an ancient reputation as an aphrodisiac; the Kama Sutra and
Ananga Ranga contain numerous recipes for increasing sexual vigour which
include licorice. It can be chewed to relieve a sore throat and gargling
with an infusion of the root relieves a dry cough and oral inflammations.
As it soothes irritation caused by acids, it is prescribed for gastric
ulcers.
Modern research has
shown it to have effects upon, amongst other organs, the endocrine system
and liver. As an anti-hepatotoxic licorice tea is helpful in the treatment
of chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis, for which it is been widely used in
Japan.
It has a variety of uses in bronchial problems such as catarrh, bronchitis
and coughs in general. Liquorice is used in allopathic medicine as a
treatment for peptic ulceration, a similar use to its herbal use in
gastritis and ulcers. It can be used in the relief of abdominal colic.
Licorice sticks are commonly chewed, used in tea, or to flavor other
beverages.
